Director of Human Resources – Law Firm

A prestigious law firm is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to oversee all aspects of HR practices and processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong HR background, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for fostering a positive, inclusive, and productive work environment. This newly created role is on-site and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Align HR strategies with the firm's overall goals.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant workplace federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Establish systems and maintain personnel and employment data in accordance with best practices.
  • Maintain the Employee Handbook and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Address employee questions, concerns, conflicts, and grievances in a fair and compassionate manner.
  • Conduct initial investigations of employee concerns, document findings, analyze situations, and escalate to management as necessary.
  • Manage non-attorney staffing, recruiting, and onboarding, including:
    • Writing job descriptions
    • Coordinating interviews
    • Developing recruitment strategies
    • Extending offers of employment
    • Conducting pre-employment checks
    • Managing orientations and integrations
  • Serve as a liaison between HR and other business units.
  • Develop and implement a performance management system to track employee productivity.
  • Create programs to address performance gaps.
  • Conduct HR training and education for employees.
  • Administer employee benefits programs, including health and retirement plans.
  • Oversee employee relations to foster a positive and engaged workplace culture.

Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws including OSHA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, ADEA, and FMLA.
  • Advanced knowledge of HR best practices, principles, and California employment regulations.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, demonstrating initiative and accountability.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including active listening and clear communication.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with the highest level of professionalism.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and supervise teams effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HR applicant tracking software.
  • Previous experience working within a law firm organizational structure is required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • SHRM certification required.
  • 10 years of HR experience, with at least 8 years in managerial positions.
  • Strong judgment and analytical skills.
  • Ability to commute on-site five days per week.
  • Occasional travel within California as needed.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $190,000 to $225,000, depending on experience and skill set. This does not include discretionary bonuses or other career-enhancing opportunities.
