Director of Human Resources – Law Firm
A prestigious law firm is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to oversee all aspects of HR practices and processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong HR background, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for fostering a positive, inclusive, and productive work environment. This newly created role is on-site and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Align HR strategies with the firm's overall goals.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant workplace federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Establish systems and maintain personnel and employment data in accordance with best practices.
- Maintain the Employee Handbook and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
- Address employee questions, concerns, conflicts, and grievances in a fair and compassionate manner.
- Conduct initial investigations of employee concerns, document findings, analyze situations, and escalate to management as necessary.
- Manage non-attorney staffing, recruiting, and onboarding, including:
- Writing job descriptions
- Coordinating interviews
- Developing recruitment strategies
- Extending offers of employment
- Conducting pre-employment checks
- Managing orientations and integrations
- Serve as a liaison between HR and other business units.
- Develop and implement a performance management system to track employee productivity.
- Create programs to address performance gaps.
- Conduct HR training and education for employees.
- Administer employee benefits programs, including health and retirement plans.
- Oversee employee relations to foster a positive and engaged workplace culture.
Competencies:
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws including OSHA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, ADEA, and FMLA.
- Advanced knowledge of HR best practices, principles, and California employment regulations.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, demonstrating initiative and accountability.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including active listening and clear communication.
- Ability to handle confidential information with the highest level of professionalism.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and supervise teams effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HR applicant tracking software.
- Previous experience working within a law firm organizational structure is required.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field.
- SHRM certification required.
- 10 years of HR experience, with at least 8 years in managerial positions.
- Strong judgment and analytical skills.
- Ability to commute on-site five days per week.
- Occasional travel within California as needed.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $190,000 to $225,000, depending on experience and skill set. This does not include discretionary bonuses or other career-enhancing opportunities.
